Flexible data collection and distribution without loading external content

Some companies have a very strict policy when it comes to collecting and distributing data from a website. Such a policy often states that no external files may be loaded that can change the content on the website. This way, companies have full control over the operations on their websites. Luckily there is a solution that provides a flexible data collection and distribution infrastructure without loading external content.

Tag management ruled out

Due to these restrictions, tag management systems are automatically ruled out. After all, with a tag management solution you can indeed change the content on a website any way you like ‘from the outside’. A tag management application loads a JavaScript file to dynamically place tags in the website’s pages. In the user interface you can edit the content of that file. For some companies that’s too ‘risky’: any error in the configuration leads to the content not (properly) shown.

O2MC platform and DimML

Even data collection and distribution using the DimML programming language via the O2MC platform does not meet all demands of this kind of policies. DimML uses a single line of code to load a file from an external domain. Nevertheless this code is indeed safer than using the JavaScript file in a tag management system, because it is generated by a programming language (rather than by pieces of direct code in a tag management system). Yet, with the standard implementation of DimML, it still is possible to adapt content in real-time, by writing a DimML program.

Pixel request via DimML

However, the solution we came up with for one of our clients uses the DimML language in a different way. Aside from loading a single line of code, it is also possible to request a pixel with the parameters you need. Once this request is done, the O2MC platform can be used to distribute the data. In that process, nothing is sent back to the customers’ website, so the content cannot be edited. A client can send pixel requests at his own discretion, leaving the flexibility of the platform intact. Sending the pixel is a one way connection: nothing can come back to influence the page.

Building pixels

This solution offers the flexibility of a DimML implementation or a tag management system, without the possibility of changing the website’s content. We do have to note that this approach does take a little more effort from a company’s IT department. Even though companies have to build the pixels requested from the O2MC platform themselves, the additional time this requires is outweighed by the safety this solution offers.

Alternative for existing solutions

Apart from this side note, this solution can very well be an alternative for a tag management or standard DimML implementation. It has the flexibility of a tag management system, without the possibility of JavaScript errors or changes in the website content. And that makes this set-up an ideal solution for companies that want to have the utmost control over their data and content, such as banks and insurance companies.
